How does the spur gear slew drive realize self-locking?

Spur gear slew drive is often referred to as spur gear slewing drive. The transmission principle is a reduction device that rotates the gear ring of the slewing bearing through a pinion. It is easy to come to a conclusion from the transmission principle, the spur gear slew drive cannot self-locking, if you want to achieve exact stop, you must use a braking device to lock it.

The following are five spur gear slew drive locking methods designed by U-TRSM.

1.The spur gear slew drive driven by a servo motor, under the condition of small inertia, the spur gear slew drive is usually locked by the servo motor's exact stop. The locking force of the servo motor is amplified by the gear ratio of the planetary reducer and the spur gear slew drive, finally reflected on the turntable, the final locking force on the turntable is still very large, which is very suitable for small inertia conditions.

2.The spur gear slew drive that using hydraulic motor, during use, the hydraulic motor can be braked to achieve the locking of the spur gear slewing drive. There are usually three hydraulic motor braking methods:

  • Braking with overflow valve: It can achieve bidirectional braking on the hydraulic motor and can play a buffering role.
  • Braking with accumulator: Install accumulators near the oil inlet and outlet of the hydraulic motor to achieve bidirectional braking on the hydraulic motor.
  • Braking with normally closed brake: When the hydraulic oil in the brake hydraulic cylinder loses pressure, the brake will act immediately to achieve braking.

3.The spur gear slew drive that using brake reduction motor, the disk brake of the brake motor is installed on the end cover of the non-output end of the motor. When the brake motor is connected to power source, the electromagnet attracts the armature, the brake armature is separated from the brake disk, the motor rotates. When the brake motor loses power, the electromagnet cannot attract the armature, the brake armature contacts the brake disk, the motor immediately stops rotating. The purpose of the spur gear slewing drive lock is realized through the characteristics of the brake motor's power-off braking.

4.Design pin holes on the rotating ring on the spur gear slew drive. For the spur gear slewing drive that needs to be locked in a fixed position, we can design the pin hole on the rotating ring on the spur gear slewing drive during designing stage, design air-operated or hydraulic plug mechanism, when the spur gear slewing drive rotates, the bolt mechanism pulls out the pin, the spur gear slewing drive can rotate freely; when reaching the fixed position that needs to be stopped, the bolt mechanism inserts the pin into the bolt hole, the slewing rings driven by the spur gear slewing drive are fixed on the frame and cannot be rotated.

5.Independent brake gears on the spur gear slewing drive. For applications that require frequent braking and large braking force, the above-mentioned braking methods can no longer meet the use requirements, large braking forces will cause failure of the connection between the gears, reducers and motors, cause premature damage to the reducer. For this reason, U-TRSM has designed spur gear slew drives with independent brake gears (see the figure below), designing separate brake gears to be responsible for braking of the spur gear slew drive can achieve independent braking, avoid transmission connection failure and avoid damage to the reducer or motor.

Spur gear slew drive has high transmission efficiency, high rotation, high precision, compact structure, small size, suitable for lightweight design, very suitable for use in construction machinery, automation equipment, special vehicles and other fields. The above only lists several locking methods for spur gear slewing drives. In daily design, Unique Transmission's engineers will customize solutions for customers, keep learing, keep optimizing and continuously improve the design.
